Objectives

The Degree in Primary Education is aimed at providing teachers with a basic general training for educating children aged between 6 and 12 years old, and giving them the foundations for an autonomous, respectful and participative development and growth in all subjects. This wide-ranging training includes subjects ranging from sciences, mathematics and literature, to art and foreign language.

  • Future teachers should be able to anticipate students' educational needs, taking into account their family and social and cultural environment, in order to provide suitable responses for students' present and future needs.

  • They should be capable of adapting to a constantly changing society, acquiring new competences in the use of new didactic methods and tools, be creative, innovative and committed to their work, and conscious of their role as agents of social and cultural change.

Competences

They must promote human rights and principles of universal accessibility, equality of opportunities and values for a culture of peace.

These graduates must be capable of integrating knowledge, reflecting on relevant social, educational, scientific and ethical issues, autonomously enhancing their abilities, competences and knowledge, and fostering autonomy among their students.

They must also be able to work with educational authorities and colleagues towards educational improvement, contributing to the application of new organisational and management models in education centres.

Student profile

Future teachers should be interested in education, with patience, flexibility and tolerance, and an ability to understand children. They should have analysis, attention, perception, expression and persuasion skills, good memory and creativity.

Professional opportunities and officially regulated professions

Graduates in Primary Education are qualified to work in teaching professions at private and public education centres; public and private primary schools; educational units in hospitals, prisons, non-governmental organisations and other fields related to children formation, such as libraries and museums.
